Vacuum Pot Brew Guide

Brewing coffee with a vacuum pot can produce a clean and full-bodied cup when done correctly. Following these steps will help you achieve consistent results. Enjoy your coffee!

Step-by-Step Guide to Brewing Coffee with a Vacuum Pot/Siphon Coffee Maker

STEP 01

Prepare the Equipment

  • Gather Your Equipment: You will need a vacuum pot (siphon coffee maker), a heat source (like an alcohol burner or butane burner), a coffee scale, a timer, and a stirring utensil.
  • Boil Water: Preheat water to just below boiling (around 200°F or 93°C) to speed up the process.
STEP 02

Weigh and Grind the Coffee

  • Weigh the Coffee: Measure out 20-25 grams of coffee beans for a standard 16-ounce (475 ml) brew. Adjust the amount based on your desired strength.
  • Grind the Coffee: Grind the coffee beans to a medium consistency, similar to table salt. This grind size is crucial for proper extraction.
STEP 03

Assemble the Vacuum Pot

  • Add Water to the Bottom Chamber: Pour the preheated water into the bottom chamber of the vacuum pot. This helps speed up the brewing process.
  • Attach the Filter: Place the filter in the top chamber and secure it according to the manufacturer's instructions. Ensure the chain or spring is properly attached to the bottom of the top chamber.
  • Assemble the Pot: Fit the top chamber into the bottom chamber, ensuring a tight seal.
STEP 04

Heat the Water

  • Place on Heat Source: Place the vacuum pot on your heat source and turn it on. As the water heats, it will be forced up into the top chamber due to the pressure difference.
STEP 05

Add Coffee Grounds

  • Add Coffee Grounds: Once the water has moved to the top chamber, add the ground coffee. Use a stirring utensil to ensure all the grounds are saturated.
STEP 06

Brew the Coffee

  • Start the Timer: Begin a timer and allow the coffee to brew for about 1-2 minutes. Stir the coffee gently halfway through the brewing process to ensure even extraction.
STEP 07

Remove from Heat

  • Remove from Heat Source: After the brewing time is complete, remove the vacuum pot from the heat source. As the bottom chamber cools, a vacuum will form, drawing the brewed coffee down through the filter into the bottom chamber.
STEP 08

Serve and Enjoy

  • Disassemble the Pot: Once the coffee has fully moved to the bottom chamber, carefully remove the top chamber. Be cautious as it may still be hot.
  • Pour and Enjoy: Pour the brewed coffee into your cup and enjoy. Vacuum pot coffee is typically clean and full-bodied.
