Turkish Coffee Maker

Brewing Turkish coffee is an art that produces a rich, aromatic, and flavorful cup when done correctly. Following these steps will help you achieve consistent results. Enjoy your coffee!

Step-by-Step Guide to Brewing Coffee with a Turkish Coffee Maker

STEP 01

Gather Your Ingredients and Equipment

  • Ingredients: You will need finely ground coffee (preferably Turkish coffee grind), water, and sugar (optional).
  • Equipment: You will need a cezve (Turkish coffee pot), a coffee cup (traditionally a demitasse cup), a spoon, and a heat source (stove or portable burner).
STEP 02

Measure and Add Ingredients

  • Measure Water: Use the coffee cup to measure the amount of water you will need. Fill the cup with cold water and pour it into the cezve. Use one cup of water per serving.
  • Add Coffee: Add one heaping teaspoon of finely ground coffee per cup of water. Adjust the amount based on your taste preference.
  • Add Sugar (Optional): If you prefer your coffee sweet, add sugar to taste. Common options are:
  • No sugar: Sade
  • Little sugar: Az şekerli (1/2 teaspoon per cup)
  • Medium sugar: Orta şekerli (1 teaspoon per cup)
  • Sweet: Şekerli (1.5-2 teaspoons per cup)
STEP 03

Mix the Ingredients

  • Mix Thoroughly: Stir the coffee, water, and sugar (if using) thoroughly with a spoon until well combined. Do not stir again after this step.
STEP 04

Heat the Coffee

  • Place on Heat Source: Place the cezve on a low heat source. The key to Turkish coffee is to heat it slowly.
  • Monitor the Coffee: As the coffee heats, it will start to foam. Do not let it boil. When the foam rises to the top of the cezve, remove it from the heat.
STEP 05

Create the Foam

  • Distribute the Foam: Using a spoon, distribute some of the foam into each coffee cup. This foam is a signature characteristic of Turkish coffee.
  • Return to Heat: Place the cezve back on the heat source and allow the coffee to foam up again. Repeat this process 2-3 times, but do not let the coffee boil.
STEP 06

Serve the Coffee

  • Pour Slowly: After the final foam rise, pour the coffee slowly into the cups, ensuring an even distribution of the foam. Pouring slowly helps to keep the grounds settled at the bottom of the cezve.
  • Let Settle: Allow the coffee to sit for a minute to let the grounds settle at the bottom of the cup.
STEP 07

Enjoy

  • Serve and Enjoy: Serve the coffee with a glass of water and, optionally, a piece of Turkish delight. Sip slowly and enjoy the rich, thick texture and robust flavor of Turkish coffee.

Additional Tips

  • Coffee Quality: Use freshly roasted and finely ground coffee for the best taste. Turkish coffee grind is finer than espresso grind.
  • Water Quality: Use filtered water for the best taste.
  • Cezve Care: Clean your cezve thoroughly after each use to maintain the quality of your coffee. Rinse and dry it properly to prevent any residue buildup.
