Moka Pot Brew Guide

Brewing coffee with a Moka Pot can produce a strong, espresso-like cup when done correctly. Following these steps will help you achieve consistent results. Enjoy your coffee!

Step-by-Step Guide to Brewing Coffee with a Moka Pot

STEP 01

Prepare the Moka Pot

  • Disassemble and Clean: Ensure your Moka Pot is clean and free of any old coffee grounds or oils. Disassemble the pot into its three main parts: the base, the filter basket, and the top chamber.
  • Preheat the Water: Preheat water to just below boiling. Using preheated water helps prevent the coffee from burning and gives you better control over the brewing process.
STEP 02

Weigh and Grind the Coffee

  • Weigh the Coffee: Measure out 20-22 grams of coffee beans for a standard 3-cup Moka Pot. This is approximately 3 tablespoons, but weighing is more accurate.
  • Grind the Coffee: Grind the coffee beans to a medium-fine consistency, similar to table salt. This grind size is crucial for proper extraction.
STEP 03

Add Water and Coffee

  • Add Water to the Base: Fill the base of the Moka Pot with the preheated water up to the safety valve. Do not cover the valve.
  • Add Coffee Grounds to the Basket: Fill the filter basket with the ground coffee. Level the coffee with a finger or a flat surface, but do not tamp it down.
STEP 04

Assemble the Moka Pot

  • Assemble the Pot: Place the filter basket into the base and screw the top chamber onto the base securely. Be careful as the base will be hot from the preheated water.
STEP 05

Brew the Coffee

  • Place on Heat: Place the Moka Pot on a stove over medium heat. Ensure the handle is not directly over the heat source.
  • Monitor the Brew: Leave the lid open to monitor the brewing process. Coffee will start to flow into the top chamber. You should hear a hissing or bubbling sound as the coffee brews.
STEP 06

Remove from Heat

  • Remove When Done: Once the top chamber is filled with coffee and you hear a gurgling sound, remove the Moka Pot from the heat. This indicates that all the water has been pushed through the coffee grounds.
  • Cool the Base: Optionally, you can place the base of the Moka Pot under cold running water to stop the brewing process and prevent over-extraction.
STEP 07

Serve and Enjoy

  • Stir the Coffee: Before serving, stir the coffee in the top chamber with a spoon to ensure an even flavor.
  • Pour and Enjoy: Pour the coffee into your cup and enjoy. Moka Pot coffee is strong and rich, similar to espresso.
