Cone Pour Over Brew Guide

Brewing coffee with a cone pour-over method can produce a clean, flavorful cup when done correctly. Following these steps will help you achieve consistent results. Enjoy your coffee!

Step-by-Step Guide to Brewing Coffee with a Cone Pour-Over

STEP 01

Prepare the Equipment

  • Gather Your Equipment: You will need a cone-shaped dripper (such as a Hario V60, Kalita Wave, or Chemex), paper filters, a gooseneck kettle, a coffee scale, and a timer.
  • Boil Water: Heat water to just off the boil, around 200°F (93°C). Using a gooseneck kettle allows for better control during the pouring process.
STEP 02

Weigh and Grind the Coffee

  • Weigh the Coffee: Measure out 20 grams of coffee beans for a standard 12-ounce (350 ml) cup. Adjust the amount based on your desired strength.
  • Grind the Coffee: Grind the coffee beans to a medium-fine consistency, similar to table salt. This grind size is crucial for proper extraction.
STEP 03

Prepare the Filter and Dripper

  • Place the Filter: Place a paper filter in the dripper. If using a Chemex, fold the filter according to the instructions.
  • Rinse the Filter: Pour hot water through the filter to rinse away any paper taste and preheat the dripper and your coffee mug or carafe. Discard the rinse water.
STEP 04

Add Coffee Grounds

  • Add Coffee Grounds: Place the dripper on your coffee mug or carafe. Add the ground coffee to the filter and gently shake the dripper to level the coffee bed.
STEP 05

Bloom the Coffee

  • Start the Timer and Add Water: Begin a timer and pour a small amount of hot water (about 40-50 grams) over the coffee grounds to saturate them evenly. This step, known as blooming, allows the coffee to release trapped gases and enhances flavor.
  • Wait: Allow the coffee to bloom for about 30-45 seconds.
STEP 06

Continue Pouring

  • Pour in Circles: After the bloom, continue pouring hot water in a slow, circular motion, starting from the center and moving outward. Avoid pouring directly on the filter.
  • Maintain Water Level: Aim to keep the water level consistent, allowing it to draw down slightly before adding more water. Pour steadily until you reach the desired total water amount (usually around 300-350 grams for a 12-ounce cup).
STEP 07

Complete the Brew

  • Total Brew Time: The total brew time should be around 3-4 minutes. If the water drains too quickly or too slowly, adjust your grind size next time (finer if too fast, coarser if too slow).
STEP 08

Serve and Enjoy

  • Remove the Dripper: Once the water has fully drained through the coffee grounds, remove the dripper from your mug or carafe.
  • Stir and Enjoy: Give the brewed coffee a gentle stir to ensure an even flavor and enjoy your freshly brewed pour-over coffee.
